Monday Night Backgammon – 27th October
We had 14 players at Monday Night Backgammon 11 of whom were involved in OXBG league action with nine results were reported.
In Div2 (Red) Mark Seal recorded first ever league victory, beating Kevin Carter 9-7 thereby elevating himself off the bottom of the table.
In Div2 (Yellow) Stuart beat Lucila moving himself out of the relegation zone.
In Div3 (Blue) there were 2 results. Joost beat Donal and then Donal beat Amanda. So Joost goes top with Amanda currently in the second promotion spot.
In Div3 (Red) there were no less than 5 results, 3 of them involving Andrew who dispatched George twice and then Zev courtesy of a double backgammon. Andrew’s two victims had some solace as they both beat Shirley. Shirley had no solace… These were Andrew and Shirley’s last matches of the “term” and put Andrew into top position with Shirley in the second promotion spot. However with a single match to go Shirley’s promotion hopes rely on Zev beating George by less than 4 points.
All OXBG league results and tables have been updated and can be seen [here].
As well as league action we also welcomed, not for the first time, maths student Alex. However this is the first time I’ve welcomed him and used his correct name (formerly welcomed as “Andrew”. Doh!) Anyway, I failed to get Alex’s contact details. Please feel free to remind me next time to pick up contact details!
Online League Matches
On Sunday 26th October Ardi beat Phil in the first OXBG Div1 match played online. Ardi is currently unable to attend Monday Nights so he’s trying to complete his season playing online. The match against Phil was played on Heroes. However its starting to look like it will be easier for more players to play on Backgammon Hub, so I’ll be setting up “private rooms” there and inviting players to join the rooms. Hopefully it will make finding OXBG league opponents easier and league administration somewhat less laborious.
Oxford Monte Carlo Mini-Satellites
UK Team captain Chris Rogers is currently organising a series of Satellite tournaments aimed at getting more UK players to the backgammon World Championship in Monte Carlo next July. These satellites are mostly played online, on Backgammon Hub. 32 players pay £107 entry (£117 non-UKBGF members) to win £3,200 to fund flights, accommodation and entry into the masters flight in Monte Carlo. In a similar spirit, to get more Oxford players going to Monte Carlo, we're organising some mini-satellites.
Tony Lee won the first 4-man mini-satellite and is now entered into the Main Satellite where he’s playing his first round match against Merrin Rose at 12noon next Tuesday, 4th November. If you’re registered on the Hub you can login and watch!
A second mini-satellite is now in the offing. It’ll be a £15 entry 8 player knockout. Ping me a message (whatsapp or oxfordbackgammon@gmail.com) if you’d like to play.
Sunday Afternoon Tournament
The date of the next of our experimental Sunday Afternoon tournaments has changed – it will now be on Sunday 16th November. £10 entry plus optional side pools. Max 32 players. Two flights, Main and Consolation, so everyone is guaranteed at least 2 matches. Upstairs at the Slow and Steady, OX1 4PD. 1pm Registration, play to commence at 1.30. If you want to play click [here] to sign up.
